Adderall and modafinil are two medicines whose names circulate together among students and employees as “smart drugs” that help with staying up and concentrating, but they differ in composition, use and degree of danger. Adderall is a mixture of amphetamine salts, a strong stimulant prescribed for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy, and carries a clear potential for addiction.
Modafinil, on the other hand, is a wakefulness-promoting agent prescribed mainly for disorders of pathological sleepiness, and its potential for misuse is lower but not zero. In this article we compare them, explain why they don’t make you smarter, the risks of taking them without a prescription, and what is known about their availability in Egypt. No doses here; any use is by prescription and with a doctor’s follow-up.
What is Adderall?
Adderall is a brand name for a mixture of dextroamphetamine and amphetamine, meaning it belongs to the same amphetamine family as many street stimulants, with one important difference: it is a pharmaceutical preparation of known composition dispensed in measured doses and under follow-up. It works by increasing the release of dopamine and noradrenaline in the brain and preventing their reuptake, raising alertness and attention, and raising pulse and blood pressure along with them. To understand this family and its effect when used outside the medical setting, see our guide to amphetamines.
What is modafinil?
Modafinil is chemically different from amphetamine, and is classified as a wakefulness promoter. It works mainly by inhibiting dopamine reuptake, with effects on other systems linked to wakefulness. Its effect is calmer than traditional stimulants, so it doesn’t usually give the same rush and high, which is why in the United States it is placed in a lighter control schedule than Adderall. But “calmer” doesn’t mean “safe for everyone”, as we will see.
The approved uses of each
| Medicine | Approved uses | What it isn’t indicated for |
|---|---|---|
| Adderall | ADHD in children and adults, and narcolepsy | Staying up to study, weight loss, and improving performance in healthy people |
| Modafinil | Narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorder, and residual sleepiness with sleep apnea alongside a breathing device | Compensating for deliberate lack of sleep, raising intelligence, and treating ordinary tiredness |
Some doctors may use modafinil off-label in specific situations, but the evidence varies, and it isn’t considered an approved treatment for ADHD in most guidelines.

The difference between Adderall and modafinil in brief
- Family: Adderall is an amphetamine stimulant, and modafinil a non-amphetamine wakefulness promoter.
- Strength of effect: Adderall is stronger at raising energy and mood, and modafinil calmer.
- Addiction potential: relatively high with Adderall, and lower with modafinil but possible.
- The most serious effects: the heart, psychosis and addiction with Adderall, and rare severe skin reactions with modafinil.
- Control: both are prescription medicines, and Adderall is under tighter control.
Why do students misuse them as “smart drugs”?
A medical student has an exam in three days and a syllabus he hasn’t started, and hears from a classmate that a “pill” will let him study for twenty hours straight. This scene repeats every exam season. It is fed by a real feeling of alertness and enthusiasm after the pill, so the student thinks he is learning more. But studies in healthy people indicate that any improvement in memory and understanding is limited, and that what changes more is the feeling of confidence and motivation. And the price: insomnia that hits the consolidation of information in memory, anxiety before the exam, and sometimes an energy crash on exam day itself.
There are those who use them for other reasons: drivers on long shifts, night-shift workers, young people seeking weight loss, or staying up at parties with alcohol, which is a dangerous combination. Alcohol hides the stimulant’s feeling of tension, and the stimulant hides alcohol’s feeling of drunkenness, so the person drinks more than their body can bear without noticing, and the heart is put under double pressure in a single night.
What is the real alternative for improving concentration when studying?
If concentration has been weak since childhood and in all areas, it may be undiagnosed ADHD, and the treatment here is an assessment by a doctor, not a pill from a classmate. But if weak concentration is new or linked to stress, the causes usually lie in simpler places:
- Lack of sleep, the biggest enemy of memory.
- Anxiety and depression, both of which weaken attention and deserve treatment.
- A phone left open next to the book the whole time.
- Studying for hours in a row without breaks instead of short regular sessions.
- Excessive coffee and energy drinks, which raise tension and cut into sleep.
The risks of Adderall
- The heart: palpitations and high blood pressure, and misuse may lead to a dangerous rhythm disturbance or a clot, especially with an undiscovered heart defect.
- Mental health: anxiety and irritability, and with large amounts and staying up, suspicion and hallucinations resembling psychosis may appear.
- Sleep and appetite: severe insomnia and weight loss.
- Seizures: with large doses or with other medicines.
- Interactions: the risk increases with alcohol, with antidepressants that raise serotonin, and with other stimulants.
The risks of modafinil
- Severe skin reactions: rare but serious, such as a rash with blisters and peeling, usually appearing in the first weeks. Any skin rash calls for stopping the medicine and going to the doctor immediately.
- The heart and mood: palpitations and chest pain in some users, anxiety or agitation, and rarely hallucinations or suicidal thoughts.
- Headache, nausea and reduced appetite: the most common effects.
- Hormonal contraceptives: it may weaken their effectiveness, which many women don’t know.
- Chronic lack of sleep: the medicine hides tiredness and doesn’t remove the brain’s need for sleep.
Addiction potential: Adderall in the lead
Adderall’s leaflet carries an explicit warning of the potential for dependence and misuse. When it is taken in large amounts, snorted, or used for repeated all-nighters, the reward system is strongly activated, so the student starts taking it “for exams only”, then for every study day, then for any task. On stopping, a crash period appears: long sleep, hunger, a depressed mood and an urgent desire to go back. This is the same picture we see with street stimulants, and the details of its signs are in our article on amphetamine addiction symptoms. As for modafinil, its addiction potential is much lower, but its leaflet mentions that it may cause dependence, and some people rely on it psychologically to do their work every day.
Legal availability in Egypt in general
As far as is known, Adderall isn’t usually available in Egyptian pharmacies as a registered product, amphetamine is under strict control in Egyptian law, and pills offered as “Adderall” online or on social media are of unknown origin and composition, and may be street amphetamine or counterfeit Captagon. Some modafinil products, on the other hand, may be available by prescription and are subject to dispensing rules that change from time to time, and we can’t be certain of the status of every product. What is certain is that buying either without a prescription, or importing it online, is against the rules and unsafe.
Call an ambulance on 123 immediately if you see
After taking Adderall, modafinil or unknown pills sold as focus medicines:
- Chest pain or severe, irregular palpitations
- A very high temperature with sweating or dehydration
- Seizures or loss of consciousness
- Hallucinations, frightening suspicion or severe agitation
- A skin rash with blisters, peeling or swelling of the face

Questions many people ask
Its addiction potential is lower and its stimulant effect calmer, but it may cause rare serious skin reactions and heart and mood problems. Neither is used without a prescription.
It isn't among the approved uses in most guidelines. The approved medicines for ADHD are chosen by the doctor after assessment.
No. Adderall is a medicine of known composition made of amphetamine salts, while street Captagon is usually of unknown content. But both carry a risk of addiction when misused.
This is never advised; pills sold online are of unknown origin and may contain other substances, and buying them without a prescription is against the rules. The safe route is an assessment by a doctor.
Talk with him calmly without accusation, and book an assessment with a psychiatrist to find out whether he has undiagnosed ADHD or the beginning of dependence.
