Indian Lyrica: What It Is, How It Differs From Original Lyrica and Why It Is More Dangerous

Indian Lyrica is smuggled pregabalin sold without a prescription in the Gulf: how it differs from Lyrica, why its unknown dose is riskier, signs, and the law.

Indian Lyrica: smuggled pregabalin compared with original Lyrica — unknown dose, risks and the law in the Gulf — Riviera Life

The short answer

Indian Lyrica is a common name in the Gulf for pregabalin capsules attributed to Indian factories and sold outside pharmacies. The active substance in them is the same substance found in original Lyrica, so there is no separate drug by this name. The difference is in the source and the control: the original medicine is dispensed on prescription from a known source, while the person taking a smuggled capsule doesn’t know its real origin or how much substance is inside it, and it may have been filled locally from an unknown powder. That is why its danger is linked to the unpredictable dose, to mixing with alcohol, sedatives and opioids, and to the legal penalties in Gulf countries.

  • Active substancePregabalin, the same substance as original Lyrica
  • Source of the dangerAn unknown dose and source outside drug regulation
  • In Kuwait and Saudi ArabiaA controlled substance, held only with a prescription

One question keeps coming up in different forms: is “Indian” another type of Lyrica? Is it stronger? Does it show up in a test like the others? Conflicting information about this name spreads in gatherings and on social media; some of it portrays it as a completely different new substance, and some of it dismisses it because it is “just a nerve medicine”. Here we explain what Indian Lyrica really is, what makes it more dangerous than the medicine a doctor prescribes, the law’s position on it in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, and what to do if you discover that someone close to you is taking it.

What is Indian Lyrica?

Lyrica is a brand name for the medicine pregabalin, which is dispensed on prescription to treat nerve pain, partial epileptic seizures alongside other medicines, and some cases of generalized anxiety in a number of countries. As patent protection expired, many companies around the world began producing pregabalin under different brand names, and India is one of the world’s largest producers of generic medicines.

In the drug market in the Gulf, the description “Indian” came to be used for capsules that are smuggled and sold without a prescription, often at high strengths. So the name is a popular description of the supposed source, not a scientific classification. What matters is that the substance meant is one and the same: pregabalin, with all its effects, risks and dependence. Anyone who wants to learn about the substance itself, its medical use and its effect on the brain will find it in our pregabalin guide.

Why is it called “Indian”?

The name comes from the fact that a large part of the pregabalin seized in smuggling shipments in the region is attributed to Indian factories, including a shipment of around four and a half million pregabalin tablets from India seized at the Libyan port of Misrata. And under pressure from the spread of misuse inside India itself, the Indian authorities added pregabalin in May 2026 to Schedule H1, which tightens the conditions for dispensing and recording it in pharmacies.

But the name guarantees nothing. In August 2026, Kuwait announced it had seized an illegal factory filling Lyrica capsules, along with around five tonnes of powder and nearly four million capsules ready for sale. In other words, a capsule sold as “Indian” may really have been made in India, or it may have been filled in an unknown place from a powder whose composition no one knows.

The difference between Indian Lyrica and original Lyrica

Point of comparison Original Lyrica or licensed pregabalin Smuggled Indian Lyrica
Active substance Pregabalin Assumed to be pregabalin, with no guarantee
How it is obtained A medical prescription and a licensed pharmacy Dealers and an illegal market
Actual dose Matches what is written on the pack Unknown, and may be much higher or lower
Follow-up A doctor sets the dose, monitors side effects and plans stopping No follow-up, and the dose escalates at the user’s decision
Impurities and mixing Subject to quality control Possible impurities or other substances
Legal status in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia Permitted with a valid prescription Possession punishable by law

Why is Indian Lyrica more dangerous?

The danger doesn’t come from “Indian” being a stronger substance in itself, but from the conditions in which it is used:

  • The unknown dose: the maximum in the medical leaflet for pregabalin is 600 mg a day divided into two or three doses, and someone using smuggled capsules doesn’t know how much they are really taking, so it is easy to exceed this limit by a wide margin.
  • Escalating doses: the user is looking for euphoria and relaxation, and with tolerance they increase the number of capsules, often reaching amounts no doctor would prescribe.
  • Mixing: the most dangerous thing about pregabalin is combining it with opioids, alcohol or benzodiazepines, because that increases the risk of depressed breathing. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has warned about this specific risk. The details of combining it with alcohol are in our article on pregabalin and alcohol.
  • Impurities: a capsule filled outside licensed factories may contain undeclared substances, and this can only be known through laboratory analysis.
  • No stopping plan: someone taking pregabalin on prescription is tapered off gradually by their doctor, while the user usually stops suddenly when the supply is cut off or the money runs out, and faces withdrawal unprepared.

The effects pregabalin has on the body and mind at high doses, from dizziness and blurred vision to weight gain and dependence, are detailed in our article on the harmful effects of pregabalin.

Indian Lyrica in the Gulf: the scale of smuggling

Official seizures show that pregabalin has become one of the most smuggled substances into the Gulf. In March 2024, the UAE and Kuwait announced in a joint operation the seizure of around 3.7 million Lyrica pills, 2.75 million of them in Ajman and a million at Kuwait International Airport. In August 2026 came the Kuwaiti seizure described as the largest in the country’s history, with a value estimated at around 150 million Kuwaiti dinars. These figures explain why the authorities deal strictly with smuggled Lyrica, and why so many people in Gulf countries search for it.

In Kuwait, pregabalin and gabapentin were added in 2021 to Schedule No. 4 attached to Psychotropic Substances Law No. 48 of 1987, under Ministry of Health Decision No. 47 of 2021, so possessing Lyrica without a valid prescription became a matter referred to the drugs prosecution. That law was then replaced by Decree-Law No. 159 of 2025, which brought the narcotics and psychotropic substances laws together in a single text, and penalizes using psychotropic substances or possessing them for personal use outside the licensed circumstances. To learn about the penalties and the path of voluntary treatment without a criminal case, see our article on Kuwait’s drug law.

In Saudi Arabia, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority has since 2015 listed products containing pregabalin among controlled products under special provisions and conditions, restricting their dispensing to hospitals and government care centers, with the quantities dispensed recorded. The treatment options available there are explained in our article on addiction treatment in Saudi Arabia.

The rule in both cases is the same: someone taking pregabalin on a valid medical prescription isn’t treated as a drug user, while buying and possessing smuggled capsules puts the person within reach of the law, whatever the reason.

Signs of using Indian Lyrica

The family is often the first to notice the change, before the user admits anything. Signs that deserve attention include:

  • Dizziness and an unsteady walk, and slow or slurred speech resembling the effect of alcohol without its smell.
  • Sleepiness at unusual times, or the opposite: extra energy and talkativeness, then a crash.
  • Blurred vision, difficulty concentrating and forgetfulness.
  • Weight gain and swollen feet.
  • Mood swings and irritability when getting the capsules is delayed.
  • Unknown strips or capsules, and repeated requests for money with no clear reason.

Does Indian Lyrica show up in a drug test?

Yes. In the end it is pregabalin, and a test that looks for it specifically detects it just as it detects the original medicine; the description “Indian” changes nothing about that. But pregabalin isn’t included in many of the usual rapid test strips, so a special test is requested for it. How long it stays in urine, blood and hair is explained in our article on how long pregabalin stays in your system.

Stopping Indian Lyrica: why it shouldn’t be sudden

Someone used to high doses of pregabalin who then stops suddenly may suffer insomnia, anxiety, sweating, nausea and headache, and may have seizures, especially if their doses were large or they have a history of epilepsy. And because the dose of smuggled capsules is unknown in the first place, it is hard to estimate the severity of withdrawal in advance — another reason for stopping to be under medical supervision. The stages and duration of withdrawal are in our article on pregabalin withdrawal symptoms.

How can Riviera Life help you?

At Riviera Life, dealing with Indian Lyrica addiction begins with an assessment that establishes the actual amount the patient is used to, and whether they mix it with other substances; then a safe, gradual taper plan is set under medical follow-up, followed by psychotherapy that addresses what drove them to use — anxiety, pain or insomnia. The steps and length of the program are in our article on pregabalin addiction treatment.
