I Have a Drug Test Soon: What Should I Do? Safe, Legal Options Instead of Tricks

A drug test coming up for work, a license or marriage? What to do if you don't use, tried once or use regularly, confirmatory tests, and why tricks fail.

I have a drug test soon: safe, legal steps depending on your situation instead of tricks — Riviera Life

The short answer

If you have a drug test coming up, for work, a license or marriage, start with three steps: gather the prescriptions for any medicine you take and tell the lab about them, know that you have the right to request a confirmatory test if a positive preliminary result appears, and don’t try any trick to cheat the test, because tricks are usually detected and make your position worse. And if you actually use, the step that protects you is confidential voluntary treatment before the test, not after it, without stopping dangerous substances such as alcohol, sedatives and pregabalin suddenly on your own.

  • If you don’t useDeclare your medicines and ask for confirmation
  • If you useConfidential voluntary treatment before the test
  • What not to doCleansing tricks, or stopping suddenly alone

“I have a drug test tomorrow, what do I do?” is a message that reaches every addiction hospital in different forms, sometimes in the middle of the night. The sender may be someone who has never used but is afraid of a medicine they take, someone who tried once at a party, or someone who has used for years and feels the walls closing in. This guide divides the situation according to your case, and explains what actually protects you in each, away from the tricks promoted online.

First: if you don’t use and fear a false result

  • Write a list of everything you take: blood pressure and heart medicines, painkillers, cold and cough medicines, antidepressants and supplements.
  • Carry the original prescriptions, and tell the lab about them before the sample is taken.
  • If the preliminary result is positive, ask for the confirmatory test; it identifies the substance itself and distinguishes a medicine from a drug.
  • Don’t drink unusual amounts of water before the test, as a diluted sample may be rejected and the test repeated.

The medicines that can give a misleading preliminary result are explained in our article on drug testing.

Second: if you were exposed to smoke or tried once

Passing exposure to hashish smoke in an open place rarely gives a positive result, but sitting for hours in a closed place may. A single try may show in a test depending on the substance, the type of sample and the time that has passed. Honesty here is better than late justification, and if the employer allows it, talking to the organization’s doctor before the test is better than explaining the result afterwards. And if you find that “just once” keeps repeating, read the importance of early addiction treatment.

Third: if you use regularly

Here there is no trick that protects you, but there are steps:

  1. Don’t try tricks. Vinegar, salt, IV drips, cleansing drinks and swapping the sample are usually detected, and turn a health problem into tampering; the details are in cheating a drug test: why the tricks fail.
  2. Don’t stop alcohol, sedatives or pregabalin suddenly on your own after long use, as this may cause seizures or serious complications.
  3. Ask for voluntary treatment before the test. In Egypt, officials of the Addiction Fund have stated that an employee who comes forward for treatment before a testing campaign is treated free and confidentially. The hotline is 16023.
  4. Talk to a doctor confidentially. Seeing a doctor doesn’t mean a report to the police, and in Egypt, treatment doesn’t expose those who seek it voluntarily to accountability, as explained in our article on the law and addiction in Egypt.

By type of test: what differs?

Work and hiring tests

Tests for Egyptian government employees are regulated by Law No. 73 of 2021, covering hiring, promotion and surprise testing, with a confirmatory test for a positive result. It is reported that refusing the test without an excuse may be treated as proof of use, so refusal isn’t a solution.

Driving license tests and road campaigns

The danger here isn’t only the result; driving under the influence of any substance threatens your life and others’. If you use, don’t drive until you start treatment. Read driving under the influence of drugs.

Tests for marriage or at the family’s request

A drug test isn’t on the announced list of tests in the premarital screening initiative, but it may be requested by agreement between the two sides. If there is use, frankness with the other side and starting treatment before marriage is more honorable than a result discovered afterwards, and marriage itself doesn’t treat addiction.

What if the result actually comes back positive?

  • Don’t deny it angrily; ask which substance appeared and what type of test was done.
  • Ask for the confirmatory test if it hasn’t been done, and present your prescriptions.
  • If the result is correct, treat it as an opportunity to start, not the end of the road; many people began their recovery at exactly this moment.

The day before the test: a practical checklist

  • Prepare a recent prescription or medical report for any medicine you take, especially painkillers, sedatives, epilepsy and ADHD medicines.
  • Don’t start a new medicine unnecessarily, such as cold medicines containing stimulants or codeine painkillers; if you must, keep the box.
  • Drink your usual amount of water, as drinking too much may make the sample diluted so it is rejected or must be repeated.
  • Sleep well and carry your ID, and ask in advance about the type of sample, the place of the test and how long the result takes.
  • Know your right to a confirmatory test before you go, so you don’t miss the deadline for requesting it if the first result is positive.

If you use regularly: safety before the result

Fear of the test may push you to stop suddenly a substance you have used for a long time. With some substances this is a real danger. Stopping alcohol, sedatives such as Rivotril and Xanax, or pregabalin suddenly after long use may cause seizures or delirium. With opioids such as tramadol, withdrawal is exhausting and raises the risk of going back to a large amount days later. So if you use regularly, the right step is to consult a doctor confidentially before any decision. This consultation doesn’t mean a report to any authority. The doctor sets a safe plan for stopping, and this may be the start of the treatment that protects you from the next test too.

And if your test is specifically for work or a driving license, the committee’s steps, the confirmatory test and prescribed medicines are explained in drug testing for employees and licenses in Egypt. You’ll find how long each substance shows in tests in our articles on how long substances stay in the body, such as how long hashish stays in your system and how long tramadol stays in your system.
